Spatial Data Infrastructures

Known GeoNetwork opensource based Catalogues
A list of known GeoNetwork opensource based catalogues. Please contact us to have your catalogue listed!
The GeoNetwork opensource DVD online
On this site you will find all the necessary software to install GeoNetwork opensource (GN) and its embedded web map viewer InterMap opensource. You can choose to install GN as a stand alone application on your desktop PC or do a more comprehensive installation suitable to run GN on a server. We have included all the applications needed to get you started. Our tests have been conducted using these same applications and versions.
Spatial Data Infrastructure Cookbook v2.0
An excellent book detailing all aspects of setting up a Spatial Data Infrastructure is the Spatial Data Infrastructure Cookbook v2.0 (PDF) January 2004. This document was developed by the GSDI Association (http://www.gsdi.org) where documents in several languages can be downloaded.

Tools

deegree tools
A range of tools for data conversion from the deegree project.
AVL2SLD (deegree)
This program converts ESRI *.avl files to OGC SLD documents for use with a map server.

Desktop Applications

gvSIG
gvSIG is free and open source (GNU/GPL) desktop GIS strongly oriented to manage geographic information and towards Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI). It is characterized by a user-friendly interface, with a quick access to the most common GIS and CAD file formats both vector (shp, dgn, dxf, dwg, gml, etc.) and raster (ecw, mrsid, tiff, img, jpg2000, etc.) and furhermore it's able to connect with all kind of geodata through remote services like WMS, WFS, WCS, JDBC (geodatabases). Catalogue and gazetteer services can be used too with gvSIG.
uDig
A desktop GIS application with much emphasize on support of internet map services. The User-friendly Desktop Internet GIS (uDig) is both an application with which users can create, acquire, view, and modify geospatial data and a platform through which developers can create new, derived applications. uDig can therefore provide a core element in an internet aware Geographic Information System. The application is based on the Eclipse framework, so build as plug-ins for different functions. Can also embed existing Eclipse plug ins. Version 1.0.0 was released in June 2005.

Server Applications

GeoServer
Full transactional Web Feature Server with an integrated WMS & WCS. We have ideas to deploy GeoServer and GeoNetwork opensource as one package.
MapServer
A very powerful and fast Web Map Server. Can be used to serve WMS, WCS and WFS but also to develop custom mapping applications through a direct interaction with the API. Uses the GDAL and OGR libraries.

Web Based Client Applications

Chameleon
Chameleon technology represents a revolutionary advancement in Web mapping technology. It has been developed by DM Solutions with the goal of producing a highly customizable and adaptable environment for deploying and managing Web mapping applications.
InterMap opensource
Light, mainly serverside based map client that tries to limit web traffic between server and client (the user). Part of the GeoNetwork opensource package.
MapBuilder
Mapbuilder is an open source project that provides a client-side solution for dynamically generating web page content from XML documents. It is a JavaScript library that implements the Model-View-Controller (MVC) design pattern in the browser.
MapLab
DM Solutions MapLab is a suite of Web-based, open source tools that simplifies the process of deploying MapServer Web mapping applications. MapLab supports every stage of publishing spatial data online in live mapping applications. It facilitates the discovery and integration of local and remote data sets, the cartographic representation of map layers, and the management of MapServer maps and applications on local and remote Web servers.
52°North SecuritySystem
52°North's first quality assured Security System was released the end of February. It provides access control to OGC web services implemented in Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDIs). The components Web Authentication Service (WAS), the Web Security Service (WSS) enable the control of access to services such as Web Mapping Services, thus allowing users to access only those layers of a service for which he/she is authorized. Access to controlled services via arbitrary desktop applications which support access to Web Mapping Services (e.g. ESRI ArcMap) is provided for by a Web Security Client (WSC).
52°North Sensor Observation Service
The second 52°North quality assured software component was released the beginning of March 2006. The 52N Sensor Observation Service allows interoperable provision of geo-referenced measurement data. As a result, it is easily integrated in geodata-infrastructures and geoservice-infrastructures. In situ sensors (e.g. water gages) as well as remote sensing sensors can be used for data collection.

Libraries / API's

GDAL
GDAL is a translator library for raster geospatial data formats. As a library, it presents a single abstract data model to the calling application for all supported formats. The related OGR library (which lives within the GDAL source tree) provides a similar capability for simple features vector data.
