This tutorial leads you through the process of including new metadata record into the GeoNetwork system using an XML documents. This is an advanced procedure of creating new metadata based on a format (XML) widely used by several GIS applications to store geographic information.

Creating a metadata using the XML Metadata Insert tool

This tool is particularly useful if you already have a metadata in XML format, for instance created by some GIS application, and you want to import it into the GeoNetwork database. Very important is that the metadata must be in one of the standards used by GeoNetwork: ISO19115, FGDC and Dublin Core.
Of course the authentication of your password is the starting point to perform the selection of the XML Metadata Insert tool from the Administration page (Figure 16).

 As shown in the figure 17, the main actions to be performed are the following:

  1. Paste the XML file that contains the metadata information in the "Metadata" text area, and be sure that the mdFileID element in the XML structure is empty, since GeoNetwork automatically generates a new identifier for the imported metadata.;
  2. Select from the drop down list the group in charge of the metadata;
  3. Select the metadata schema (ISO19115, FGDC or Dublin Core) that you want to use;
  4. Select the validate check boxif you want your metadata to be validated according to the related schema. Note that up to now the validation is available only for the ISO19115 schema.
  5. Click the Insert button and the metadata will be imported into the system.
